Frequently Asked Questions
Tallow is simply the rendered fat from cows, but not all tallow is the same. We use only suet tallow from 100% grass-fed and grass-finished cows because it is the purest and most nutrient-dense form available. For eczema-prone and sensitive skin, these nutrients matter. Suet tallow is naturally rich in vitamins A, D3, E, and K2, which are essential for skin barrier repair and reducing inflammation. It also contains B vitamins like B1, B4, and B12 that support cellular renewal, something eczema-damaged skin needs on a deeper level.
What makes suet tallow especially powerful for eczema is how closely it resembles our skin’s own sebum and matches the saturated fat profile of a healthy skin barrier. This allows it to lock in moisture, prevent moisture from escaping the skin, and help rebuild the compromised barrier that eczema disrupts. Suet tallow also offers a wide range of fatty acids, including CLA and omegas 3, 6, 7, and 9, along with naturally soothing stearic acid. Together, these nutrients calm irritation, reduce flare-ups, deeply nourish dry patches, and support skin regeneration.
This is why we use suet tallow. It is gentle, effective, and biologically compatible with eczema-prone skin, helping the skin heal naturally from the inside out.
At Gentle Tallow Co, our tallow balms are designed with one clear purpose: to bring real relief to eczema-prone and sensitive skin. While they are versatile enough for daily use from head to toe, every formula is crafted to support the unique needs of irritated, inflamed, and barrier-damaged skin. Use it as your daily facial moisturizer, an all-over body balm, or apply it directly to dry, itchy patches whenever your skin needs extra care.
Our balms are especially beneficial for:
• Eczema flare-ups and chronically dry, irritated skin
• Sensitive skin that reacts to conventional creams
• Itchy, inflamed patches caused by allergies or topical steroid withdrawal
• Chapped lips, cracked hands, and rough areas like elbows and heels
• Baby skin concerns including diaper rash and cradle cap
• Redness, irritation, and compromised skin barriers
• Sunburns and minor burns that need gentle, soothing support
• Post-shave irritation and new tattoos that require clean, simple care
Whether you’re calming a flare-up, managing daily sensitivity, or giving your skin a clean, nourishing moisturizer, our tallow balms are made to simplify your routine and support healthy skin.

Pure tallow has a mild, neutral scent that varies slightly with the season. The scent is usually faint and slightly nutty or earthy. We offer both unscented and scented balms (with lavender essential oil) to suit your preference.
We recommend the "unscented" balm for more sensitive skin.
Our balms last up to 6–9 months when stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat. For best results, use clean hands when applying and seal the lid tightly after each use.
Yes, our tallow balms are safe to use during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. For nursing mamas dealing with soreness, cracking, or irritation, we recommend our Simple Tallow Balm, it’s our most gentle option for sensitive skin.
Yes, we always recommend doing a small patch test first to make sure there are no unknown sensitivities or allergies.
No, refrigeration isn’t necessary. Our tallow balms are naturally shelf-stable and store well at room temperature. If you’re stocking up or want an extra cooling effect (especially for burns or irritation), you’re welcome to keep a jar in the fridge. Just be sure to store your balm in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight.
We source our tallow from 100% pasture raised, grass fed and grass finished cows. They are raised naturally with no chemicals, no GMOs, and no hormones.
We are committed to maintaining consistency by using the same high-quality ingredients and carefully controlled process in every batch of our balms. Our primary ingredient, tallow, is rendered from kidney fat (suet), which is known for its purity and richness. Because we work with Pure, Organic ingredients, some variation from batch to batch is expected. Factors like the animals’ diet, environment, and seasonal changes can influence the fatty acid profile of the tallow, resulting in subtle differences in scent, color, or texture.
That said, our recipe and rendering method remain the same every time. Each batch is made with intention, and we follow multiple quality checks to ensure you’re receiving a high-quality, effective product.
Our tallow balms are made with organic ingredients and contain no synthetic stabilizers, so they are sensitive to heat and can melt in warm environments or during shipping. The good news is that melting does not affect the quality or benefits of the balms.
To restore it:
1. Place the jar in the fridge for about 30 minutes or until it re-solidifies.
2. Let it come back to room temperature before using for a smoother texture.
3. If the texture seems different (less whipped), it’s still perfectly safe and effective to use.
To help prevent this, store your balm in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat.
