Frequently Asked Questions
Tallow is simply the rendered fat from cows — but not all tallow is created equal. We exclusively use "suet tallow" from 100% grass-fed, grass-finished cows — the most nutrient-dense fat available. It’s naturally rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D3, E, and K2, all vital for healthy skin. You’ll also find B vitamins like B1, B4, and B12, which support cellular repair and skin renewal. It closely resembles our skin’s own sebum — the natural oil that protects and moisturizes — and shares a similar saturated fat profile to the skin’s lipid barrier, helping to lock in moisture and reinforce skin integrity.
Suet tallow also contains a diverse blend of fatty acids — including CLA, omegas 3, 6, 7, and 9, plus stearic acid — which work together to calm irritation, deeply nourish, and support skin regeneration.
At Gentle Tallow Co, our tallow balms are one of the most versatile and nourishing products you can have in your home. Use it daily in place of your facial moisturizer or body lotion, or apply it as needed anywhere your skin needs care. Our balm is made to support and soothe a wide range of skin needs, including:
• Dry or sensitive skin
• Chapped lips and cracked heels
• Nursing nipples and mastitis
• Diaper rash and cradle cap
• Eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea
• Sunburns, minor burns, and kitchen burns
• Stretch marks, scars, and c-section recovery
• New tattoos and post-shave care

Pure tallow has a mild, neutral scent that varies slightly with the season. The scent is usually faint and slightly nutty or earthy. We offer both unscented and scented balms (with lavender essential oil) to suit your preference.
We recommend the "unscented" balm for more sensitive skin.
Our balms last up to 6–9 months when stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat. For best results, use clean hands when applying and seal the lid tightly after each use.
Yes, our tallow balms are safe to use during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. For nursing mamas dealing with soreness, cracking, or irritation, we recommend our Simple Tallow Balm — it’s our most gentle and nourishing option for sensitive skin.
Yes, we always recommend doing a small patch test first to make sure there are no unknown sensitivities or allergies.
No, refrigeration isn’t necessary. Our tallow balms are naturally shelf-stable and store well at room temperature. If you’re stocking up or want an extra cooling effect (especially for burns or irritation), you’re welcome to keep a jar in the fridge. Just be sure to store your balm in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight.
We source our tallow from local Missouri farms. The cows are 100% pasture raised, grass fed and grass finished. They are raised naturally with no chemicals, no GMOs, and no hormones.
We are committed to maintaining consistency by using the same high-quality ingredients and carefully controlled process in every batch of our balms. Our primary ingredient, tallow, is rendered from kidney fat (suet), which is known for its purity and richness. Because we work with Pure, Organic ingredients, some variation from batch to batch is expected. Factors like the animals’ diet, environment, and seasonal changes can influence the fatty acid profile of the tallow—resulting in subtle differences in scent, color, or texture.
That said, our recipe and rendering method remain the same every time. Each batch is made with intention, and we follow multiple quality checks to ensure you’re receiving a high-quality, effective product.
Our tallow balms are made with organic ingredients and contain no synthetic stabilizers, so they are sensitive to heat and can melt in warm environments or during shipping. The good news is that melting does not affect the quality or benefits of the balms.
To restore it:
1. Place the jar in the fridge for about 30 minutes or until it re-solidifies.
2. Let it come back to room temperature before using for a smoother texture.
3. If the texture seems different (less whipped), it’s still perfectly safe and effective to use. If you prefer a whipped texture, you can gently re-whip it after it cools.
To help prevent this, store your balm in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat.
